The Noble Eightfold Path is a set of mutually supporting qualities, rather than eight steps that must be completed one at a time.
Wisdom
Right view develops understanding of suffering and its ending. Right intention turns towards renunciation, goodwill and harmlessness.
Ethical conduct
Right speech avoids false, divisive and hurtful speech. Right action and right livelihood bring care into behaviour and the way we make a living.
Mental cultivation
Right effort prevents and abandons unwholesome qualities while developing and sustaining wholesome ones. Right mindfulness attends clearly to body, feelings, mind and mental qualities. Right concentration develops collectedness; the early texts describe it in terms of the jhānas, states of meditative absorption.
